…simple. valentine’s. decor.

I realize that many think that Valentine’s is a commercial holiday, but as a mom of three who has been married for 14 years I will take any excuse to go out to a quiet dinner and feel loved for an evening. Not to mention chocolate is always involved and my new tradition of ordering my family Georgetown Cupcakes is pretty exciting. Can. Not. Wait. Until. They. Arrive.

I must admit that I also love the colors of Valentine’s. I heart pink and red combined and although I don’t dress with these colors or decorated my home in them, they are so sweet and pleasing.

Let’s take a break from winter to fill our eyes with these delicate, pink images many of which can be easily arranged for your love. You can achieve any of these looks pretty much with pink flowers – fresh or dried – and an interesting vessel to put them in. Must run to the flower shop myself! (Aka the grocery).

Even if you are not into Valentine’s, I feel like placing flowers in your kitchen, even just for yourself, allows us to break from the cold and mundane of February. Why not.

…refinishing my kitchen table

Dear Loved Ones!

I’ve missed you all terribly and today is a time to rejoice – school is open! The kids got on the bus! I took a shower! I went to the gym! I may actually sit down to eat my lunch instead of standing at the counter on call for the next need from a child.

Last time I posted was during the Christmas-colored fog that settles on all of us, clouding our perception of all things and making us live in a world where we only eat cookies, watch the Hallmark Channel and order gifts from Amazon Prime. This is what happened during one of those dizzy evenings as DH was working on our theater room that he wanted to surprise the kids with (more on that later). In other words, I was alone upstairs and ready to do some damage.

Just to give you a reminder, this is how my kitchen table has looked for the past 6 years. I  bought it from Pottery Barn and was really happy with it.

Small Room Design

I was inspired to change it because that’s what I do. I like to change things up and play. The kids were mourning the loss of the table, I think Greta even cried, but I explained as they like to create beautiful art at school, this is mommy’s way of creating. So stop crying about the table! J/K. Kind of.

If you did not read my last post, here is what I did:

1. I painted the base of the table with Old White and heavily distressed it. I did not use any wax as I wanted a rough look.

2. We sanded the table completely down to the natural wood. If you have a piece of store bought furniture it will likely have some kind of shiny finish on it. If you want to manipulate the color or look you cannnot change anything unless you have taken all this off. This requires an electric sander.

3. I applied Dark Wax all over the surface per MMS tutorial.

4. I buffed it off with a rag in certain places and left it in others to create an old look.

5. I took a piece of rough steel wood and scratched it up.

6. Farm table done and ready for dinner.

Well, not quite.

I quickly decided that I needed new chairs to match the new look and I knew the exact ones that I wanted via many beautiful Pinterest pictures. I was shocked to receive them as we were literally leaving the house for our Christmas Eve celebrations as I had not warned DH that I had made the decision to replace kitchen chairs….and the light fixture. Definitely needed a matching pendant. I wanted something that screamed farm and nothing works better than a rubbed black farmhouse pendent. Here is where we are:

The good news is that when we are ready to build a farmhouse in the country we will just need to replant this look. I’m pretty sure I won’t want to change anything by that time. hehe.
