…favorite things friday: trunks

Let’s talk about trunks, Baby.

Some of you may have seen a recent Instagram post about my old suitcases that I stacked to make a mock side table. Whenever I go to a vintage shop I can’t help gravitating towards trunks and old boxes. I think because they are super interesting, but also functional.

If you can’t make it to a market or antique shop, there are so many great options out there now to do this very thing. Here are some examples.

PS – you don’t need to stack the suitcases, you could place once on a foyer table or under a couch or ahem, pew.

Small Room Design

…zaha hadid love.

In a past life, before babies and paint, I worked in the design industry in marketing. It was the perfect place for me to land because I can really appreciate all things created out of necessity and puzzled together until the perfect solution is brought to fruition in a real, live building or space.

Architecture stems from a need and then travels through the minds of talented people to become something beautiful and functional. It is practicality meeting the impractical – at least that is what really cool, memorable design means to me.

I think it is worth highlighting the designs of a talent that went too soon yesterday. Zaha Hadid.

I definitely think this kind of design requires talent meeting opportunity meeting a good dose of luck. I mean, what designer does not want to create memorable, high-end design? There is so much that goes into getting a building actually built. Kind of like art or theater or fashion – all the good stuff. Her work is all that architecture should be and in a very male-dominated profession, she was regarded as the greatest female architect in the world to date. She is worth our attention and admiration.

Here’s a look at some amazing images.

And to all my architect friends, I think of you often and wish I could pop in to hear your thoughts today.

…your questions on the master redux and shopping links

Hi Lovelies!

Thank you for all the sweet compliments on my new space. Here are the answers to your questions about the renovation with links to some of the products I chose.

What is the size of the rug in your bedroom and do you have it completely under the bed?  Would you mind sharing where you purchased it.

I found this run from Overstock. When shopping for bedding, bath towels, lighting and rugs, I typically search here first for discounts. Actually, I go the expensive websites and then try to copy the look at Overstock or a discounted site. It is a nuLOOM rug, which is a quality brand sold on many sites. Mind is the nuLOOM Handmade Moroccan Trellis Faux Silk Wool Rug found here.

I have the top of the rug almost to the wall underneath, the bed centered, and then it rolls out to maybe 7 ft, passing the end of the bed.

Looks beautiful! What is the color of the stain used for the new floors?

We used Ebony for the flooring. It sounds like it may be dark, but this is the result. It looks much warmer in the light, doesn’t it?

Can you tell us about the multiple layers in your bedding?

I heart pillows and puffs and blankets and sheets when I sleep. DH does not. Whoever is in bed first is usually the winner of the pillow battle. So, here are the layers that I use because this is a good question (BTW – the layers in the photo are out of order because my cleaning women did it this way and I didn’t switch it before taking the shot.)

  1. 3 medium pillows with decorative shams
  2. 2 king-sized pillows with pillow cases
  3. 2 king-sized pillows with decorative shams
  4. 1 super long bolster
  5. 1 throw
  6. 1 large stuffed cat

Then I have sheets, a quilted coverlet and a white duvet. It sounds like a lot, but once you snuggle in it’s perfect!

Are you selling any of the furniture that you are not using?

Right now I am moved all excess pieces into the guestroom. I’m sure I will switch things around in there too so stay in touch!

I have to have these! Where are they from (frames)?

Restoration Hardware. 19th C. Framed HERBARIUMS Ivory, set of 6 found here.

Do you find that the mirrored nightstand a collect a lot of dust? That’s always been my concern with purchasing them.

I honestly have not noticed any dust in fact! I have experienced this with glass tops, but for some reason with the mirrors I only see the reflection and the light.

Could you tell me why you decided on hardwood? Do you know the pros and cons of both?

Again, I really hate seeing buckled carpet. Like hate it. It looks old. Yes, you can have it stretched and that’s a great option. We also had a huge chocolate lab (who recently went to doggie heaven) and he used to sleep on the side of the bed. The carpet became dingy and tinted and just did not look clean. I love the hardwood so much because it has a really clean look to it. I don’t miss the carpet at all!

Can you link the area rug?

See above.

This chandelier is beautiful!!!   are you a RH member… I think if you become a member for a $100 annual fee you get a 25% discount… can you confirm?

Yes, I saw that. I also see new prices underneath their products for members. I do not know all the details or if it would be worth doing. I am not an RH member, but the discount sounds nice.

Would you share where you got the lovely prints please?
