…beware of sara smith

December 19, 2011 by christen | 3 Comments

I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten alot of interest on my Etsy shop and it’s all very exciting. I did however run into an issue with a certain Sara Smith. Turns out she is a scam artist on Etsy.

I received an email from Sarah inquiring about the china cabinet.

She seemed interested and wanted me to email her off line. I was excited about the potential and read the email to my DH. As I read it aloud something sounded very generic about it. Here’s the email:

“Hello, I want to make immediate purchase of your item, what is the present condition? do you accept PayPal as mode of payment? what is the final asking price? Kindly get back to me with your reply to my private email: smithsarah_0022@yahoo.com
hope to read from you soon.
Best Regard.”

I guess it sounds a little more fishy reading it aloud because there was no reference to me or the piece. Turns out “Sarah” has been doing this all over Etsy and hacking into people’s Paypal accounts. So if you get an email from her ignore and just go to bed.

P.S. Thanks to Uncle Lance that is faithfully reading. And to my SIL that took a tumble yesterday playing with my daughter!

That happens to me on Craig’s List all the time. A very generic email, usually with typos or broken English, and no reference to the specific item. I always forward them to the CL security people and then immediately delete. You’ve got to keep your eyes open out there–lots of scams. 🙂

    Hi

I received the same email from Sarah Smith. However, I only realized she (or he) was a scam artist after I have sent the PayPal invoice yesterday. How can she/he get into your PayPal account? Should I close my PayPal account?

Oh no, Santie! I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m not quite sure what the next step should be for you. Could you get in touch with Paypal or your bank and put a block on the charge going through? That’s what I would do. Then email “Sarah Smith” asking for some legitimacy? Hmmmmm….Keep me updated!
