…british invasion

Beatles, Charlotte Bronte, Earl Grey, Mister Darcy, Queen, the Queen. My obsession with all things English has crept into my mid-30s. Once upon a time I got lost in England before actually going & living in England. The two were not synonymous. I much prefer what I read to what I lived the early half of 1998, including the British disdain for Americans and lack of Vitamin D.

I’ve been wanting to pain a Union Jack dresser for a while and finally found a cute little dresser to do one on.

Before

I was so anxious to get started that I didn’t get a front photo of it. It’s the ugly light brown wood dresser on the left.

During

At first I had to the paint the whole thing Country Grey and then use my blue painter’s tape to section off the lighter lines that I wanted. The inner cross because a robin’s egg blue called Duck Egg and everything else I covered in an ocean blue.

I’ve only done this taping thing one other time and it was on a wall in my first house. The process was not easy. Here’s a shot of the wall back in 2001 with my cat, Shelly.

Old House

This took me FOREVER, but those lines are perfectly straight!

Here’s the Union Jack dresser that I am going to use for my son’s room.

I thought it looked great without distressing it, but of course I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I took sand paper to it and a dark wax. Now I think it looks old & almost nautical. I’m planning on doing a headboard for him too. Here’s a peak.

The stripes are not perfect, but I decided I didn’t really want to touch them up. I wanted it to look hand-done and not Pottery Barn Kids done.

I came up with a few other little idea for decorating his big boy room that I’ll share later on this week, one of which includes my appreciation of the globe.

If you are interested in a Union Jack dresser for your boy or guestroom or living room or dining room I can work with all kinds of colors. I was thinking even a monochromatic brown would look really high end. Let’s discuss! cbensten@blueeggbrownnest.com
