…building a creative business: boomerang

I worked with a wellness coach this past fall. If you have not heard of coaching it is basically someone that calls you and keeps up with your life. Your coach is there to encourage and support you. It is definitely different than therapy. Therapy, which I have been in weekly for the last 6 years and on and off for 10 before that, is work and can be really intense. Most weeks it is very intense.

I downloaded with my coach before making my decision to move into Luckett’s. She was very concrete with me and said something like, “Christen, even if you sell nothing (because that was a huge fear) or you decide not to do it for a long period, you will just bomerang back to the place you are now just with a bit more experience.” Basically, you will loose nothing. Ahhhh. I sat with that for a few days. I would loose nothing from trying something new? In fact, it would just confirm the existence of that little light that shines deep inside me, whispering that I am brave.

Many of my mom friends are entering a new phase of life where we no longer have babies in the house. We are faced with the decision of what to do with our time. Let me be clear, there is NOT much time during the day because we are still moms running around like chickens, but some of my friends have talked about starting to dive into something new. We are brave, but we don’t want to rock the boat too much, do we? What if we make changes in our schedules, our finances, our childrens’ lives, our energy level and it does not work out? Well, you would just end up where you are now. Boomerang.

There is room for all of us in our families to start on a new adventure. It will mean that you will be visible to your family and your friends and your neighbors, but if you are lucky they will just want to love and support you. It’s really about how YOU feel and what you are up for taking on.

At the end of the day, if an opportunity arises, sometimes it’s okay to jump. It may work out, it may not be ideal for you. Sounds a bit uncomfortable, but so is living with “What if?”

I used to teach a Dale Carnegie training class. When we were talking about fear and worry that accompanies decision, one of the key questions to ask was always “what is the WORST thing that can happen as a result of this action?” Once you answer that question, it usually puts things into perspective. I like to follow up with “what are some GOOD things that could happen as the result of this action.” The list of potential good things is almost always longer! I love your posts and because you are REAL. Keep it up!

Totally agree and the term boomerang…..I am at that point. I have a small business with my husband but we both work full time at our “real” paying jobs. I am so ready to step out and move forward to really trying to make a full time go of the business because it is my passion. Thank you for these thoughts. I believe that they will help me make a decision in the coming months! Please don’t ever stop sharing….

Thank you for sharing, what great advice your coach gave you!! I’ve been thinking about starting something new, too- and I always think of you as an inspiration. If YOU can find the time and the space to do it, than I should be able to, too. Thanks for being strong and using your voice and encouraging all of us to try something new!

Christen I just really want to thank you for just being you!! You give shivers up and down my arms when I read your blogs. Without you to turn to on cyberspace here I feel sometimes I’d be lost. Thanks for sharing with all of us. Confronting people is not always easy for me but know with the painting of furniture I’ve done I have to go outside my comfort zone some, but it does feel good to do that. You have been MY mentor. Thank you.

What made you pursue a coach in addition to therapy? I think I need one or both to move in the right direction personally and help to take the leap with a side business. Any advice? Thanks. P.s. Saw this post at ‘just the right time’ as I feel like my struggle is taking over my life.

Thank You for this. As I’ve said before your building a creative business posts move me and really inspire me. I’m staying super busy with my interior business and working a full time job, and your posts help keep me motivated when I’m tired or think I’m crazy for trying to balance it all…It helps to hear perspective from someone who gets it. Keep the posts coming!
