Does your piece just need just a bit of detail to make it super special? I have the answer for you! I love the idea of using wood appliques to create a piece with a bit more history & interest. Some pieces are designed with detail and some need a bit of help.
My client, Sharon, has such great taste and brings me pieces all the time to refinish for her. She found this bed on the side of the road and added the applique! Love a woman with style & can see potential.
The style of the bed has just been elevated considerably from a standard, vintage bed to something with a bit of elegance.
It works well when you have a large, flat surface to work with. Use wood glue to attach the wood applique and let dry. Then paint as you would any piece.
Sharon kindly dropped off the catalogue that she bought this applique from Van Dyke’s Restorers.
They sell them in so many styles & sizes. Check these out.
If you try them out I’d love to see! Email me photos of your work. cbensten@blueeggbrownnest.com. I’ll post the best!
Hi!
This is such a great idea. I did this years ago, but had to stop all this fun stuff when I began home schooling my 4 children! No time for anything else back then! This is a great way to make a piece much more interesting, like Christen said. The only thing different is that 12 years ago you could get the appliques at our local craft store, Michaels, less expensively.Check it out! It is fun!

Just trying to soak up some knowledge, and enjoying your site. I want to paint my 37 year old kitchen table and mismatched chairs, etc. I’d like to incorporate the chalk paint into what I already have around here, as no room for neat, special pieces….and the pieces I do have need some work. Anyway, just love your blog.
