I have painted a few upholstered chairs for clients. The best way to do this is to paint BEFORE you have the piece upholstered with the new fabric. You can strip the old fabric or you can leave it on. Either way, be sure to get into all the little crevices so that when it is fitted with the new fabric there will be not raw wood showing.
Cathy is a repeat client that bought some sweet chairs from me for her lake house. I love thinking of them in a relaxing environment!
She recently brought me two upholstered chairs that she was planning on upholstering. My job was to take care of the legs and arms.
Since she was bringing these to her upholsterer AFTER me, I did not have to tape where the wood meets the fabric.
I used ASCP Country Grey.
Ollie just can’t help himself.
I have a few projects in my garage waiting for upholstery. The wood trim has been painted. I think I am hesitating because I still want to try my hand at upholstering myself. This summer I’m going to try! Don’t worry – I’ll show you the highs & lows of the process. eek!
Hi! Have you ever painted the fabric of the chair?? I was given a set of chairs and they have fabric on the back and seat. I was just wondering if you have tried it yourself and if so how did it turn out. Any info would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Thanks for all of your posts and videos!! Love Love Love your work!!

Love those chairs!! Perfection.
I am very interested in painting upholstery fabric. Have you tried it yet? I know Annie Sloan says it can be done. What do you think? Thanks, You are very inspiring!
Would love to see how you upholster a chair. I have two chairs that need to be reupholstered. I have done dining chairs and a bench, but the arm chair is intimidating to me. 🙂
